ROUTINE DENTAL EXAMS

Regular dental checkups are vital to maintaining a healthy smile!  The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends routine cleanings every 6 months. If you follow this recommendation, it will allow you to prevent common dental concerns like cavities and gum disease.  We have two Georgetown offices that make it easy and convenient to receive the highest quality dental care.

A regular dental exam at  Thompson Family & Implant Dentistry includes a thorough oral exam to check the health of your teeth and gums.  This exam includes an oral cancer screening and professional cleaning.

PROFESSIONAL TEETH CLEANINGS

It’s important to know and understand what happens during your bi-annual teeth cleanings. Our professional teeth cleanings include six steps. We will perform an oral exam, remove the plaque and tartar, perform a gritty toothpaste cleaning, do a deep flossing, rinse thoroughly and then apply a fluoride treatment.

Our dental hygienist will do a physical exam of your entire mouth, checking around teeth and gums for gingivitis (inflamed gums) or any other potential oral concerns. From there, the hygienist will start scraping plaque and tartar around your gum lines and in between your teeth. This step is usually the patient’s least favorite part, so help yourself out! Brush and floss daily to stop plaque from hardening into tartar. After the tartar is removed, the hygienist will brush with a high-powered electric brush to deep clean and remove any tartar left behind. We will then do a deep floss between your teeth, because nothing beats an expert flossing session. From there, we rinse out any debris left behind and you will receive a fluoride treatment. The fluoride treatment lasts for months and protects your teeth from cavities.

DENTAL CAVITY FILLINGS

Dental fillings are used to fill/seal small holes in a tooth (cavities) caused by decay. Filling a cavity will stop the cavity from spreading further, which can save your tooth from potentially getting tissue damage resulting in a root canal.  There are many different types of fillings but the process for each is very similar.  The type of filling will depend on the extent of the decay. Should you need a dental filling, we will go over the options with you.

Regardless of what type of filling a patient needs, our team will ensure comfort throughout the whole process.  We will anesthetize your tooth first so you don’t feel a thing. If you do not feel comfortable receiving a numbing injection, we can also offer anti-anxiety medication (sedation) to make you feel more relaxed.
